In English, then Basque, then French.
Two months without hearing from me😨, it was time to get back to it! In this article, I share with you my Pyrenean experience: the sporting challenges it represented, the human encounters that give a whole new dimension to this experience, life in the middle of the mountains😉.
If I crossed the Pyrenees, it is above all to surpass myself physically, to clear my head and to start my sabbatical year full of enthusiasm.
The sporting challenge of the crossing 🏅
A few figures:
915km, from Hendaye to Banyuls 🌊
55.000m of difference in altitude (of which 26.000m in the Ariège part of the Pyrenees, where I left 3 lungs) ⛰️
44 days (including 4 days off) 〰️
5 nights in a campsite, 3 nights in an apartment, under the spotlight of the stars 🌟
Every day between 5h and 12h walking 🚶♂️
Ideal pace to recover: alarm clock 6.00 - bedtime 22.00 ⛺
Bagpack 36L -> 18KG (it's too much! 😫), moreover my tent didn't fit in the bag!
6 KG lost ⚖️
I realized after I left: I had never hiked in autonomy before! I always went for the day. I was engaged in a real sporting challenge.
Every day I walked between 18km and 39km, with at least 1.000m of positive/negative elevation gain (sometimes it even went up to 4.000m -> 2.000 of D+ and 2.000 of D-! 🪂). The first few days, the soles of my feet hurt, the weight of the bag was hurting me between my shoulder blades but I slept so deeply that I was able to strengthen myself day after day. It was really nice to recognize the landscapes that you leave behind you, the imposing mountains that you crossed, the places of bivouac that you chose (see photos). The mountain becomes sometimes familiar to us 👨👨👧👦.
As the days go by, we learn to better frame these days according to our physical shape, the people we walk with and the general state of mind. However, even at the end of the trip, I sometimes made a complete mistake, wanted to do too much, exhausted myself, and dragged along the beginning of an injury in the following days. Mentally, the most difficult to sustain are the orientation mistakes, following wrong beacons for 2 hours and realizing that it takes us back on the path we had taken the day before, the nervous breakdown 😠. We have to turn back. A very long day, it is indeed 3 difficult days to feel again of attack!
At first, I didn't want to take a break because I thought I was going faster without it. However, a well-focused break, which comes at the right time, allows you to start again and maintain a good walking rhythm! I would like to be able to apply it to my professional life: in front of my computer.
Another lesson learned from this sporting challenge: set up your walking goal of the day after you understand how you feel motivated today and adapt it accordingly.
The worst injury was on the first days. I had long walking days planned, the weather was wet, I was badly equipped and I made huge blisters in my toes. After that I could only bear flip-flops and was about to quit. Then, in the Ariège region, the significant differences in altitude weakened my heel and generated the beginnings of tendinitis, I held on too.
If I have been able to overcome these obstacles it is thanks to the people I met and all the good times we had. Everyone will make his own definition of a trip in the middle of the Pyrenean mountains, I remember mainly the human experience.
The crossing, building authentic and unfiltered relationships.
I had prepared myself for a much more solitary trip. However, from the very first days I was able to meet the people who were in the "same wagon" as me, i.e. walking in the same direction, who left Hendaye between June 29th and July 2nd. We very quickly became friends and formed a group that moved at the same pace, wanted to laugh together and help each other.
It is thanks to them that I relaxed the pressure, that I was able to allow myself to take advantage of the beers at the end of the day, of the snacks with industrial flavours to fill up on calories (🍫 🍩🍪🍬🥧), to think about the best places to set a tent, not to judge myself on my performances and on the contrary congratulate each other, to laugh a lot, to sing songs that don't make sense, to repeat misunderstood deliriums 😉.
In the mountains, I felt unfiltered, spontaneous and it took me very little time to create very deep connections, share intimate stories.
I spent 2 weeks in a group, then I went on my own for 2 weeks before deciding to rejoin the team to finish the GR10 in a festive and jovial spirit.
If I wanted to isolate myself and spend time alone it's because I needed more space, I wanted to challenge myself sporty and give myself moments of introspection in the mountains. Travelling alone was much harder and monotonous but also much more formative.
In autonomy, reflections in front of the power of the mountain
I discovered both a new sport and a new way to travel.
Every day, we celebrate a mini-victory. We are proud to arrive in the village. For my part, I loved sleeping at the foot of an invigorating waterfall or above a sleeping valley. I always appreciate more and more the waking up at dawn, the humidity that falls on the face, the still shy colors of the sun's reflections in the morning. I became more interested in understanding the sky, the weather, the formation of threatening storm clouds.
Curiously, it took me a long time to get to the stage where I felt an inner emptiness. For the first two weeks, there was a washing machine running non-stop in my head, I was always confronted with the same thoughts and memories. Overnight, without understanding POP! I was calmed down, everything super quite. I started to revisit forgotten experiences or analyze relationships from a completely different angle, I freely reflected on how I would look at the years to come. There are a lot of books that talk about it, walking is liberating, it's a therapy.
I have also overcome limiting beliefs. I can simply say: "I am an athlete". After a marathon and 900km on foot, I know that I love long distance sports and I look forward to the next bike trip ! 🚴♂️
I really got out of the frame to explore other horizons, looking for independence and meaning.
If I had to do it again, I would be careful to:
Better equip myself: breathable mountain socks with blister protection, a new or storm-tested tent, a waterproof jacket, a bigger backpack to fit everything, a filter bottle (Katadyn type), sunglasses, a more complete first-aid kit including a mosquito repellent, tiger balm, mosquito repellent and a more compact sleeping bag.
Don’t start too hard, time to get to know myself muscularly and mentally.
Warm up in the morning and stretch in the evening against tendonitis and to gain flexibility.
Better plan my budget and anticipate places where you can withdraw money, get delivered or buy equipment if ever. For my part I spent about 20€/day on food, lodging, beers. The same amount in buying equipment before and during the crossing.
The continuation for the Odyssey of Jindabu
You can well imagine that this experience makes you want to live many other similar adventures: The Pacific Crest Trail in the USA? The HRP on the Pyrenean ridges? The tour of the Alps with the Via Alpina? The crossing of New Zealand from the North Island to the South Island? But I’ll have to go back to work one day too!
On the other hand, once I'm settled in, I'll get more seriously on the trail.
I'm currently spending the end of the summer in the "South West French Coast", where I'm learning to surf, preparing the bike trip (bikes are out of stock since July), training on climate issues (Climate Reality & Climate Fresco), graphic design classes (Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator, Photography), looking for a permaculture training for next March and practicing yoga daily. This summer, I momentarily left the social networks. Following a MOOC on personal branding, I'm back with the account @Jin_da_bu 🚴♂️
PIRINEOEN ZEHARKATZETIK ITZULIA
Bi hilabete pasatu direla eta ez dutala berririk eman 😨, behar nizan artikulu horren idazteari berriz lotu bai! Partekatuko dautzuet ene experientzia pirineoetan : kirol desafioa, topaketa humanoak, bizia mendi erdian. Explikatuko dautzuet ere zer pasatuko den ondoko hilabeteetan enetzat😉.
Pirineoak zeharkatzearekin, xerkatzen nuen askatasuna , desafio fisiko baten eremaitea, buruaren hustea eta urte sabatikoaren hastea motibaturik!
Zeharkatzearen desafioa 🏅
Zembaki batzu :
915km, Hendaiatik Banyuls-era 🌊
55.000m gora behera (omen 26.000m Ariegean, eta egia da 3 bilika utzi dituztala han) ⛰️
44 egun (horietan 4 egun pausa) 〰️
5 gau kanpinean, 3 gau apartan, gaineratekoa izarren azpian 🌟
Egunero 5 oren eta 12 oren bide 🚶♂️
Erritmo ideala forman egoiteko : iratzarri 6.00 etan - lo egin 22.00etan ⛺
Sakua 36L -> 18KG (sobera zen! 😫), gainerat oihal etxea sakutik kanpo nuen!
6 KG galdurik eta segidan berriz irabazirik ⚖️
Joan eta niz ohartu ez ninzela sekulan autonomia-osoan ibili bakarrik mendian. Egiazko desafio bat proposatu dut ene buruari.
Egunero ibiltzen ninzan 15km eta 39km-en artean, beden 1.000m gora-beherekin. Lehen egunetan, zango aztarnek mintzen ninduten, zakuaren pizuak tiratzen omoplaten lekuan, baina akidurak izigarriko loak eginarazi dazta eta azkartu niz. Bikaina zen zure gibelean uzten dituzun paisaien ezagutzea : zeharkatu dituzun mendi mazelak edo hautatu zinituen lo lekuak.
Egunak pasatzearekin, ikasten duzu hobekio antolatzen zure eguna, kondutan hartuz zure forma fisikoa, zurekilan ibiltzen diren pertsonak eta talde espiritua. Aldiz, eta hori gertatu zaut bidai bukaeran ere, arrunt trompatzen ahal zira eta egun sobera zail bat planifikatu. Bidez trompatzea da mentalki zilenik dena, 2 orenez ibiltzea gibelerateko direkzionean. Egun lodi horiek ez dira on bidaiaren iraunkortasunarentzat. Akidura sendiarazten da eta egun pare bat behar dituzu segurrenik berriz sekulako forman izaiteko.
Hastapenean pausarik ez nuen egin nahi, ustez eta fiteago aitzinatuko nintzela. Ohartu niz untsa antolatua den pausa batek badituela munduko mereximendu guziak berriz forman atakatzeko sekulan ez bezela. Ikasi nahi nuke horren aplikatzen ene bizi profesionalari ere, zailtasunak ditut pausa batzuen egiteko ordinagailuaren aitzinean lanean ari nizelarik.
Beste ikaspen bat izan da ez helbururik hautatzea zure gorputza entzun aitzin. Zure motibazioa senditu behar duzu eta horren arabera planifikatu. Kontrakoa egiten nuen.
Denak kolpatu gira beden behin. Piesena lehen egunetan izan zaut. Egun luzeagoak planifikaturik aroa euritsu zelarik eta galtzerdi ez onekin ibiliz, sekulako anpulak egin ditut zangoetan!! Ondoko egunetan, maingu, bidaiaren gelditzeko punduan nintzan. Ariegean, gora behera inportanteek ene taloina eta belauna atakatu dituzte, baina emekiago segituz dut morala atxiki.
Azkenean, traba guzi horiek depasatu ahal izan baditut, kolektiboari esker da. Ezagutu dituztan pertsonekin hainbeste elkartasun eta momentu goxo pasatu batitut. Bakotxak bere definizioa eginen du holako bidai batetaz Auñamendien erdian, experientzia humanoaz niz orroituko lehenik.
Zeharkatzea, erlazio autentikoak eraiki
Prestatu ninzan bidaia aski bakarrik egiteko baina lehen egunetik ezagutu ditut ene erritmoan ibiltzen ziren jendeak eta fite goitatu gira denek elgarrekin bizi dezagun bidai hori.
Horier esker, desafio bat bezela hartzen nuen abenturaz goxoki baliatu niz. Presionea jautsi zaut, onartu dut garagardo baten hartzea egun bukaeran, atsaskari industrial batzuen partekatzea kalorien xeka joaiteko, bataiatzea lo leku hoberen atxemaiteko, elgarrekin irri egitea, kantu zozoen asmatzea, delirioetan joaitea, baina sustut bata besteari goresmenen egitea.
Mendian, filtrorik gabe senditu niz, batbateko arrapostuak emaiten naturaltasun handienean. Denbora izigarri motz batean ditut konekzio barneratuak sortu eta ixtorio pertsonalak partekatu.
Bi aste pasatu ditut taldean. Gero senditu dut behar nuela halaike’ etapa bat egin bakarrik. Bi aste iraun du bakartasun etapak eta nahi ukan dut talde bat berriz atxeman GR10aren bukatzeko zelebrazio izpiritu batean, irri eginez.
Bakarrik egoiteak on egin daut. Xekatzen nuen espazio geihago, desafiatu nahi ninzan ibiliz eta introspekzio momentu geihago eskaini nahi nintuen ene buruari. Zailago izan da, monotonoago ere bai, bainan horrek nu geihenik azkartu.
Autonomian, pentsaketa batzu mendiaren indarraren aitzinean
Kirol berri bat deskubritu dut, bidaiatzeko manera berri bat ere.
Egunero, irabazi tipi bat zen herri berri batera heltzean. Loriatu niz kaskada baten pean lokartzearekin edo gainetik ibar baten ikustea oheratzen. Gero eta goizago jeikitzea ikasi dut, egun berriaren humitasunaren senditzea, zeruaren argitzearen preziatzea. Egia da hor nizala hasi meteoari eta lanoer interesatzen, ortzantzer kaxu egiteko.
Denbora anitz ezarri dut lortu aitzin ixiltasun oso baten senditzea. Hutsa. Lehen bi asteetan ez niz gelditu pentsaketetan hartzeaz. Beti ber pentsaketak inarrosten nintuen, ber orroitzapenak. Ulertu gabe, batbatean : POP! Kalme kalmea jarri niz. Hasi niz orroitzapen berrien berriz bisitatzen, erlazioneak beste pundu batetik ikusten eta libreki pentsatzen ondoko urteetako plan ideier. Liburu anitzek aipatzen dute : ibiltzea terapia bat da.
Sineste mugagarri batzu depasatu ditut ere bai. Erreskiago erraiten ahal dut “kirolaria niz”. Ez ninzan sekulan hala kontsideratu, baina aldatu niz, marratoi bat eta 900km oinez, maite dut distantzia handiko kirola eta bizikletez antolatzen dutan bidaia goitatzen dut behantestia!! 🚴♂️
Kuadrotik atera nintzela senditzen dut eta hortzimuga berrien ganat abian niz, sentsu eta independentziaren bila.
Berriz egitekoa balitz, kaxu eman nezake :
Hobekiago ekipaturik joaitea : mendiko galtzerdiekin (humitasuna pasatzen uzten duten galtzerdiak, azkartuak direnak gune batzuetan), oihal etxea testa nezake ortzantzen eurite azkarren kontra lehen, ene vestaren idortasuna ere bai, bizkarreko handiago batekin joan nintaike dena barnean sar dadin, ur botoila friltrante bat (Katadyn delakoak), eguzki begilagunak, farmazia antolatuago bat (knok muskuluentzat, lakasten ateratzekoa, mustiken kontrakoa), lo saku konpaktago bat.
Ez nintaike hain bortizki hasiko, hartzeko denbora ene erreakzio muskularren eta mentalaren ezagutzeko mendian.
Beroketak eta estiraketak egin nezazke (ibili aitzin eta ondotik) tendiniten kontra eta flexibilitatearen irabazteko.
Hobeki pentsa nezake ene buxeta eta aitzinetik jakin nezake nun dirua ateratzen ahal den, nun posta bat baden koli batzuen ganat joaiteko beharrez, nun materiala erosten ahal den. Baliatu ditut 20€ egunka janarriarentzat, lo lekuentzat eta garagardoentzat.
Zein izanen da Jindaburen Odisearen segida?
Pentsa dezakezuen bezela, holako esperientzia batek beste nahikeri anitz garatzen dauzkizute : Pacific Crest Trail-a Estatu Batuetan? HRP-a pirineoen mendi puntak? Alpesen ingurua Via Alpina-rekin? Zelanda Berriaren zeharkatzea? Beste zeharkatze bat aitzin, berriz lanerat ezarri beharko nintzala uste dut!
Aldiz, leku batean finko izanen nintzelarik, serioskiago has nezake Trail-a. Maitatu dut lasterka egitea mendian, saku pizua bizkarrean ukanik ere!
Momentuan, udaren bukaera pasatzen ari niz Bokale Zaharrean, surfean iniziatzeko. Momentu berean ene larrazkenako bizikletazko bideia prestatzen ari niz, jakinez bizikletak “out of stock” direla. Hilabete bukaeran jin behar luke enea. Formakuntzak segitzen ditut diseño grafikoan, problematika klimatikoer buruz eta pentsaketak segitzen ondoko urteko ikastaroer buruz permakulturan eta zendako ez yogan. Ez niz bate aktiboa izan sare sozialetan, pausa baten beharra nuela uste dut baina har nezake berriz kondu horrekin @Jin_da_bu 🚴♂️

On doit rebrousser chemin.
Mia, belle quarantenaire parisienne, d’origine berbère.
